Understanding Your TFSA Room▾
The TFSA (introduced 2009) gives each Canadian resident an annual contribution limit. Your cumulative room is the total of all annual limits from the year you turned 18 and became a resident through the current year.
New immigrants accumulate room from their year of residency (if 18+). Unused room carries forward indefinitely, and withdrawals are added back to your room the following calendar year.
Unlike RRSPs, TFSA contributions are not tax-deductible — but all growth and withdrawals are completely tax-free, making it ideal for those expecting higher future tax rates or needing accessible savings.
